Master Joe Carney began his Tae Kwon Do training in 1993 at Kim’s Martial Arts in North Ridgeville with his son John and daughter Christine. In 1997, he tested for his first-degree black belt. While a first-degree black belt, Mr. Carney taught Cardio-Fit Kickboxing classes and became a teaching assistant in the Junior and family classes. Master Carney achieved the rank of second-degree black belt in 1999. He continued teaching Tae Kwon Do, kickboxing and women’s self defense classes. In February 2000 Mr. Carney traveled to the Cooper Institute for Aerobic Research and attended classes on Martial Art instruction becoming certified as a Martial Arts Instructor by the American Council on Martial Arts. His fellow students included Grandmaster Jhoon Rhee and Grandmaster Chuck Norris. Soon after, he became the primary instructor for the North Ridgeville location while Master Kim was working with the NFL. Master Carney began teaching with a Kim’s Martial Arts affiliate school and in 2002, Master Carney tested for the rank of third-degree black belt. As a third dan he added more teaching responsibilities and became the instructor for the Cho Dan Bo classes at that school. Master Carney finds teaching Tae Kwon Do to be the best learning experience ever. Eternal Grandmaster Kim used to ask every 2nd degree or higher black belt if they considered themselves to be a student or an instructor. Master Carney believes every student teaches him more than he could ever teach them making him a student forever. Master Carney became a fourth-degree black belt in December of 2010 and is currently assisting in the training of our Cho Dan Bo class along with some of our other classes. He is also working on compiling all of the Korean terminology for our black belt poomse. He and his wife Karen have been happily married for 8 years and live in North Ridgeville. When not in Tae Kwon Do classes Master Carney is a Bio-Medical Engineer and in his spare time likes to sing and is a gourmet cook.
