Master Patti Perhala began her Tae Kwon Do training in 1996 at Kim’s Martial Arts with her husband, Bob, and children, Ryan and Lauren. In 1999, she tested for her first-degree black belt with her husband and son. Her daughter tested the following year. They became one of the first families to all achieve the rank of black belt under Master Joe Kim. While a first-degree black belt, Mrs. Perhala taught Cardio-Fit Kickboxing classes and became a teaching assistant in the Little Ninjas, Little Dragons and Juniors classes. Master Perhala achieved the rank of second-degree black belt in 2001. She continued teaching kickboxing classes, assisting in class, and eventually started teaching classes for children and adults. She also assisted Master Kim in preparing Cho Dan Bo students (Black Belt candidates) for their black belt test. In 2004, Master Perhala tested for the rank of third-degree black belt. As a third dan she added more teaching responsibilities and became the instructor for the Cho Dan Bo classes. Since 2006, Mrs. Perhala has prepared 108 students for their first-degree black belt test. Master Perhala finds teaching Tae Kwon Do to be a very rewarding experience. She takes pride in watching students develop from timid white belts to very confident color belts and then into strong black belts. Even though she is an instructor she still feels like a student because knowledge is gained from teaching others, which helps an individual become a better Tae Kwon Do practitioner and a better instructor. Master Perhala is currently preparing to test for the rank of fourth-degree black belt in Dec. 2009. She and her husband have been happily married for 27 years. Her husband is a Rheumatologist at Northern Ohio Arthritis Center in Avon, OH. Her son, a second-degree black belt, recently graduated from Miami University and is currently a Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force. Her daughter attends Sweet Briar College in Virginia where she competes on their equestrian team. When Master Perhala isn’t at Kim’s she can be found at the barn riding and taking care of her horses.
